Hi Enki,
What a lot to think about! All very interesting needs/desires to consider.
I PURSUE my thirst for knowledge, I'd feel empty without the challenge of being able to discover more. I will forever be an eternal student of life. That's a strong need in me but it isn't to be obeyed, there's no need to feel forced to comply to something I deeply want to do.
I TRUST my instinct. It rarely lets me down. I consider my intuitive responses and if I feel it is right, I will follow them.
My conscience has to be OBEYED. I could never do anything that goes against my conscience.
I RESPECT THE OPINION of others and will consider their advice and suggestions. I might go along with them. I don't see myself as 'obeying' anyone. I certainly wouldn't obey anyone who expects me to do something that goes against my conscience, no matter what that person's status.
I obey the rules of society if they make sense to me and are made for the benefit of everyone.

When I was younger, I went mainly on my Thirst (for knowledge and empowerment) and my Instincts....
Needless to say, after more than a few failures and outright attacks in my life, I had to change my game plan.
Now I go by my Conscience first, my Instincts second. Not that I want to, not that my needs are met necessarily, but....this approach *does* keep people off of my back at least *some* of the time. It does make it *less likely* that I will do something stupid and make *more* enemies than what I can handle.
Too bad it also has the effect of putting me in a *cage* on some issues, keeping me from being as creative and productive as I once was. Being stifled, *exclusively* for the benefit of others and *never* my own does rather suck.
Oh well, what can you do....times are hard these days.
Let's hope for better, shall we? ^_^ Good Question Enki, have a star!

Enki, I'm sure it's a matter of semantics, but personally, I wouldn't use "obey."
Instinct GUIDES me first of the five, for it is the only one that is NOT influenced--to some extent--by the compass of others. It is the most true, non-intellectual ME.
Of the others, society--the world--would be the last. However much I would like to comprehend the disparity, it would be too much, & separate me from myself.
I love to learn for knowledge itself, for no other purpose; my conscience is strong--it is MY moral compass.
What a beautfully expressed answer from pollyanna.
There is a posting here that is not an answer at all, & that is sad. Self orientation, pomposity & competitiveness are transparent; this serves no contribution to your question. I would include such self serving (venting) under conscience, of which some have none. It is an immature response to your good question. I regret that I feel it's important to comment on this. "...if they see the real you they might turn away..." is an insult. I am a man, & I love YOU, dear friend.

i have a thirst for knowledge but im never dehydrated so its all fine. everyone, now and then will react to their instincts but i give it a couple seconds if it sounds like a bad idea. i usually obey my company, but only when i choose to, but many times the voice of the people are right, many but not all. i do not agree with society, the only thing is, is that i have to follow with whatever information the society gives me and work with it. the thing i obey the most, is my conscience, that thing has stuck with me and has never made me go crazy, my best friend is myself. yes, im a little crazy, whatever

MAINLY my instinct, conscience, mixed in with a little thirst
I'd also add good judgement....though I guess that's my consciene
EDIT
just explaining my answer more...since i don't have a lot else to do
I mainly go by what I FEEL I should do, then use my conscience to see if it's RIGHT, but there's still a little bit of my thirst, or desire for WANTING more
EDIT
sorry, i forgot to add one more thing. starting where i left off..
, however, all this things are taken into consideration by ME in general, and I decide from tehre

It's not a matter of which one I obey since I obey them all.
Sometimes I obey a certain point more as others and I even disobey.
I'm missing 1 category by the way, prejudice. As long as I'm not aware of personal prejudice I sometimes also Obey it... I'm not proud that I do and when I discover it a lot of obedience is expected by my conscience ;-)
But... at age 6 girls were stupid, at age 16 people who didn't like my music had no taste, at age 26 my colleague was a nerd because he only was interested in photography and who knows what I'll discover about myself in the future...

For I follow almost all of them - 1.thirst- I pursue knowledge, I always want to learn and sometimes for a desire to succeed within myself.
2. instinct - I have always trusted my gut feeling and always will. They have helped me to survive and overcome many obstacles. Also they are usually right, never have failed me so far.
3.conscience- I have always tried to consider other peoples feelings and views. Like beliefs in ones own culture, religion, etc. Sometimes as well I do something for myself such as solving an inner conflict or to satisfy my internal needs of love, happiness, desire, etc.
4. for society - not so much, I will follow certain rules such as laws, etc. but mostly what I go by is what is already my own personal beliefs. For the most part it is what is acceptable to me, such as treating others with respect, helping others, being accepting of others, etc.
I'm afraid I agree with physic cat, I'd rather see the real you then a false one no matter what but just to let you and all others here know, I think your real pics are more handsome then the fake ones. I rather have the real you my dear sweet friend and i think you are quite handsome so don't let others tell you otherwise ( I shouldn't admit this but since i think it is important to be honest I will your real pics actually is when I felt a physical attraction to the person I was talking to not the fake ones. not that i am pursuing you before anyone can accuse me of such a thing as I have been with the same guy for 12 yrs and plan on keeping it that way. I just felt I needed to make a comment about how I see you, i speak for myself no one else's speaks for me. thanks bye bye

I do obey my thirst....I don't know what a conscience is [joke]...I don't ''obey'' my company, per say [except with my daughter...I obey her every command], but I try to be a good hostess [and I don't mean a potato chip]...I do obey the pick-up-after- your-dog bi-law in our society...and I obey my instincts...so I obey all of the above.

Great question. I obey more of my thirst... for only knowledge is the power and freedom. And the only permanent happiness is the pursuit or thirst for knowledge and the joy of understanding.. and indeed the philosophy in life.
Thanks for asking and Have a great weekend.
