Terry Hatcher, through her character in the show Desperate Housewives, uttered a racist remark against Filipino doctors. She said,

"Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."

Because of that, many filipino doctors and nurses were rallying infront of the abc Building and demanding for a public apology...

what were going to do here is tell us whos side are you on:

* The filipino Doctors; or
* The Desperate housewives

and tell us your opinion, the next answerer can object what the previous answerer but importantly tell us your opinion.

The answerer that has a complete and a good opinion (regardless who side is on) will get the title of best answer (DUH! ^^)

First of all, she was not insulting the nurses or doctors, she was insulting the Institutions. Given this fact, I can not possibly be on the side of the doctors, because they are not the ones who should be taking issue here. The institutions are.

Secondly, I think that it's the writers and producers of D.H. who need to be called into question over this issue because they are the ones who wrote it and produced it. This means that I also can not possibly be on the side of the Desperate Housewives either.

Everyone needs to take a chill pill with this. While it would have been better if she's said 'I want to make sure that those diplomas are from a reputable institution' everyone knows it would not have been at all funny. And the writers wouldn't have meant anything about it. They could've just as easily have said 'indian' or 'Kazikstani' or something like that, or EVEN picked on an American college with a notorious reputation, or simply said 'out of a cornflakes box.'

Relax, settle down people. While it could've been done better, it's not something to cause an international incident over. It's fiction after all. If the doctors are too dumb to realise that, then maybe they shouldn't be doctors, no matter where they are from or taught.

why be so sensitive about such thing, it is a comedy show and you know it not the truth, there are a lot of good filipino doctors in the united states and the fact that they did pass their test and exam and permit to practice their profession in the united states means that they are qualified, if they are not then it is a slapped in the face of the AMA for them to let such person to practice medicine in this country. the Philippines produces a lot of people working in a lot of professional fields not only in the USA but all over the world and before they do they pass a very, very stringent test and most of them do pass them with high marks, sometimes better than the locals. So don't make a big deal out of this and just let it be and don't be too sensitive with such a thing!! There are more important things to worry about!!!!

I am for the Filipino doctors because not all of them are a product of questionable school. There are Filipino doctors who contributed much in the field of medicine. Terry Hatcher should have been responsible enough and called the attention of the scriptwriter about that remark because it is to her which the reaction of the ones affected by such remark will bounce back.

Of for Pete's sake! ABC was not making a remark against Filipinos, nor was Terri Hatcher. Her CHARACTER was!

Not all characters on TV shows, or in books, or in literature are wonderful, kind, non-prejudiced human beings.

In Shakespeare's Othello, the character Iago is speaking to the father of Othello's wife and refers to him as " an old black ram who is tupping your white ewe." Uh-oh! That was racial!! Does anyone feel the need to boycott Shakespeare because of that?

Mark Twain's immortal book referred to the slave character who meets with Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn as "N*i*g*@@ Jim". Watch out now!! I heard the "N" word!! Now, anyone want to go out and burn all of Twain's books?

Of course, I am not stating the "Desperate Housewives" is to be measured against any piece of classical literature for its quality, but I say that to use a character's dialog to defame or insult a people is only a tool used to define that character. It is not, necessarily, a statement by the author (or producer) against those people.

To put it simply, Terri Hatcher's CHARACTER is prejudiced....I'm sure neither the actor nor the studio are.

The desperate houswifes... Maybe I should go to the Philippines and start complaining that they have more black than white shirts for sale or that they should close down their shop because its name offends me... Perthetic... If they don't like the american or british veiws on things why don't they f*** off somwhere where they do feel welcome.... Preferably in the sea where no one will have to put up with them and they're sensitive feelings towards humour...

I think it's ok...it sounded like a joke, which everbody is entitled. There are way too many finger pointers out there pointing their finger and screaming racism. F'em.

And I'll stop there because I could go on for at least an hour.

I'm sick of minorities whining and jumping on every thing.

If they don't like things they see or hear then they can always just f**k off!
