Is there someone on a coaching staff who watches the game on TV or listens to the radio while the game is playing, to see what they recommend, though not always right, but sometimes they have good ideas, and a different insight on a coaches decision, such as challenging a play, clock management, players on the opposite team they may want to expose, keys to winning, etc. Just wondering.

No. The game is too fast paced for the coaching staff to be looking for ideas from the announcers. The coaches have spent at least a week making a game plan and rarely do they deviate from it.

Some teams that script their first 10 - 25 plays stick to their scripts no matter what.

If you have mlb gameday audio, the best or worst at this are the Padres announcers, Ted Leitner and Jerry Coleman. Coleman played for the Yankees in the 40s and 50s and cannot resist a few stories which, given the Padres mediocre play, can be more entertaining than the game. Coleman on someone hitting a home run in Boston off the right field foul pole. "I don't know why they call it the Pesky pole. The John I know never hit one over there once." Or when asked what it was like to room with Mickey Mantle on the road, "I don't know. I only roomed with his luggage." I will remember stories like that about long gone (Pesky is still around Thank God) players long after I forget about a Padre Diamondback game.

I realize some coaches seem pretty stupid, but I don't think any of them are stupid enough to listen to the announcers. Them that can coach do, them that can't talk about it.

They don't actually hear the announcers. All they hear is the coaches from upstairs in the booth pointint out various weaknesses and stuff.

Great observation and the answer is yes, although at times I wonder why. I think at times certain head coaches would accept an idea from a fortune cookie if they thought it would help win the game.

Yes because they have coachs up in the box about ten feet away. So they use what they say sometimes.

They would be stupid if they did. I know more about football than most football announcers.
