I open the backing on it and take a can of air and clean the boards and electrical and clean the heatsinks too.

Only DO this with it Unplugged and don't touch anything unless you want to kill or zap yourself. Or start a fire.

I only change mine when the monitor quits working. Which is Rare.

I've had this same Gateway VX1100 21" monitor sitting on my desk for *years*, and it's not leaving until it dies. :)

Big honking huge thing though. I brush the dust off the top every few weeks so it doesn't pile up too deep, and clean the screen when it needs it.

NOTE: *DANGER ALERT* Flyback transformers can store enough charge to seriously zap you (I mean "potentially *dead* seriously") for *weeks* after the last time it was powered up - I've managed to throw a good spark from a Mac monitor that had been off for over a *year*. Don't go opening it up to dust it if you don't know what you're doing. And if you're tempted to dust the inside of a monitor, you probably don't know what youre doing. :)

Only one in 5 years, as the monitor flyback was damaged.
