The flashing "S" light is the indication that a problem has been detected in the automatic transmission control system. There are about 15 different components that are monitored by the Automatic Transmission Control Module. If any of them stop working or start sending signals that are out of the normal range of operation the control module recognizes a failure and stores a code in its memory indicating what that problem is.

The problem can be with a vehicle speed sensor, a transmission speed sensor, a shift solenoid or other device including the control module itself. Your description would suggest the problem is with one of the shift solenoids that is responsible for changing the direction of the fluid flow inside of the transmission that causes the gear change. Those solenoids are external and do not require the transmission be removed for repair. But that's only a guess; it could also be a speed sensor that could cause that problem.

You'll need to take the car to a technician who can retrieve the diagnostic information from the control unit and do the diagnosis from there. Because of the age of the vehicle, you'd probably be best off taking the car to a Honda dealer as they have the manuals and tools that go back that far.

It means you need to quit asking this same question in multiple categories, and take your Honda into a good competent transmission shop and have the problem evaluated and fixed.

The light lighting means one or more of the systems the computer is monitoring has returned a signal outside the range it expects to see. It means, as you have found out, that the transmission will then not shift. If you continue driving it like this you eventually will have to call a tow truck to get it in, so while it will still move at all, get off the computer and take it in.
