when winter comes i am planning on turning, either my waterfall, or pipe to the shallow end off. i am doing this to reduce the curent and to stop the water getting to cold. i know that the wam water is at the bottom where my pump is, now should i stop my water fall that falls directly above the pump or stop the pipe that returns half the water to the shallow end. i have thought about raising the pump from the bottom but a lot of waste builds up on the bottom.

my pond is much smaller than yours, but I raise my pump so that the outlet is just below the surface and it only makes the surface of the water 'boil' ... with a small fountain effect, straight from the pump itself, no attachments... just enuff to keep the water moving and aerated....then, it also draws from that cold top layer of water and leaves the bottom layer less agitated....

I would wonder what would keep the shallow end from stagnation if you stopped the water return there...??... doesn't seem to me to be a good idea....

how cold will it get for you, usually?....it's not real pretty, but one winter, I erected a PVC pipe 'greenhouse' over my small pond... and the water never froze , the fish survived in a too-shallow pond, and the leaves and debris stayed out, too... if that's not totally out of the question for you, it sure did work for me.....

Leave the bottom murkey as this allows water insects and small fry to hobernate over the winter
