I know sometimes it is obvious they can't reach the ball, but sometimes it really looks like if they just moved instead of stutter stepping they'd be able to reach the ball. At least that's how it looks on the TV, it could be totally different on the court.

It's not a matter of giving up. When on the other side of the net you have to anticipate where your opponent is going to hit the ball. If you're caught leaning left and your opponent hits a good shot right, your natural reaction is to stutter step in that direction but then you realize you have no chance at getting that ball so you drop your racquet and prepare for the next point. To the naked eye it looks like you just gave up..

have you tried playing yourself?

from a far it might look like the ball is moving slowly, but when you're on the court it move a hell lot faster. i am not a pro not am i good at playing, but i sure can say that the balls those pro players hit are 5 times faster than the ones i hit, so i think they are doing the best they could...

Well, when the ball is coming at you at 100 mph+, its harder than it looks...
