Go to the mortgage company and figure out a way to get out of the house without trashing my credit. Either rent it out to roommates or sell it and move someplace smaller. Go to a social services agency and get help with utility bills, get bags of groceries, find an affordable place. Get some job counseling and get any job, no matter how low. Find an SRO if necessary as a place to stay. Then, with $1,000, I'd have two choices: 1) get a job counselor who can get me into a good job, if I have skills I can use or 2) learn how to buy things and sell them on eBay for more money. Actually, maybe sell other people's things on eBay, and take a commission: I think a lot of people need that service.

I hope this is a theoretical question and you're okay.

I'd rent out my home, for at least $1500.00 a month,(I'm told it's worth way more than that in rental income) move in with family and live off them for a change, while I saved all but the barest of living expenses, until I got back on my feet.
