I've figured out that these types of questions get asked when it's the early hours of the morning in the US. Are they ever embarrassed after they've finally gone to sleep, then they wake up later and remember the question they posted for the world to see?
It is rubbish. Believe me. The Mayans predicted no such thing. They predicted nothing, which is what will happen.

As others have said, the Mayans never made any such prediction. Modern day people, looking for any archaeological thing they can find, have latched onto the Mayan calendar and claimed that the world will end on the last date of their calendar. It's like the people who "find" all sorts of bogus mystical stuff in the shapes of the pyramids. The claim has been made about some alignment with the center of the galaxy. The sun and earth come close to lining up with the galactic center on the same date every year. 2012 is no different. And it is not a very good alignment.
Originally I think the claim was that several or all planets would line up on that date. Simple research shows this not to be the case. Not even remotely close. Other claims said that the moon would be part of that earth-sun-galactic center alignment, too. But that is also incorrect, which is probably why your source didn't mention it. The only important thing that I *know* will happen on that date in 2012, is that everybody will find out that it was all a hoax and we won't have to see questions about it on forums like this any more.
Well, not really. Somebody will come up with another prophecy of doom based on some other archaeological "revelation."

Could you please be more specific: what do you mean by "when planets align"?
All planets do not line up in a straight line, if that's what you mean by alignment. Such an event is never going to happen, it's just not possible.
If by alignment you mean a conjunction, an event when two or more celestial bodies appear close to each other in the sky, then the world will not end. These events are very common and happen all the time - many times a year with various planets. Sometimes there's even three different celestial bodies involved in a conjunction.
As the world has not ended because of these planetary alignments before, I think it's pretty safe to say that it will not end the next time.
If you're interested in seeing such events yourself, check Wikipedia's timetables for conjunctions:

Almas - please
Please do not listen to friends who do not know what they are talking about. The center of our galaxy falls in the constellation Sagittarius, which can be seen looking south in the summer sky in the northern hemisphere. Near as I can tell, the alignment you refer to occurs twice a year - once around June 20 with the sun on the side away from Sagittarius and again on Dec 20 with sun on the same side as Sagittarius. The alignment is not perfect, but gravitationally speaking it's probably more extreme this year than it will be in 2012, since this year will include Jupiter in the alignment. Of course, this also occurred in 1995, and I do not remember feeling any ill effects. In 1987, the sun, the moon, Saturn, and Mercury all lined up pretty closely with the galactic center. That was a good year for me. The galactic center is tens of thousands of light years from here, and the Mayan calendar is centuries old. Neither is even slightly significant in terms of its effect on our immediate future.

I dont think it will happen. Our solar system formed some millions of years back and has survived so far .If there is a possibility of such an alignment, it would have happened atleast a few times in the past, and the catastrophe, you have mentioned,(if at all it happens due to such an alignment) would have occured long back and we will not be living now.

Such an event will never occur.
Planetary orbits are not perfect circles, they are elliptical in shape with the sun being located at one of the two foci, depending on which planet you are considering. Furthermore the orbits vary in eccentricity, and some orbits like that of pluto and neptune are tilted at an angle with respect to the other planets. Also, the periods and magnitudes vary as you move away from the sun.

It all depends in how you see it. The world could end tomorrow...and we don't know. If the planets align and create a gravitational pull, and there's problems with our solar system, then of course there is going to be some planet changes.
For now, just enjoy everyday like it was the first day of the rest of your life.

Of course not. The world ends every time someone with an overactive imagination predicts it coming to an end and someone with a gullible mind believes it. The space aliens then come in the next day and put the pieces back together so that the rest of us don't notice what just happened.

are you talking about the 2012 prediction?
it is not only the planets that will align. but the sun, and earth will alighn with the center of our galaxy which astronomers believe contains an enormous black hole.
how that alignment will affect us, we do not know. but what i do know is that the mayans never predicted that it will be the end of the world. instead all they knew was that it is the end of the time as they know it. what that means..is some other question that needs to be answered.
