-- International Library of Poetry --
-- National Library of Poetry --
The International Library of Poetry is one of several organizations of questionable repute operating under the internet domains poetry.com and poets.com. Once known as the "National" Library of Poetry, they are now "International."

Poetry Contest = Exercise caution
Serious poets consider the International Library of Poetry contests and their affiliated organizations to be unethical, and their free poetry contests a scheme designed to prey on amateur poets by relieving them of their money.

The United States has a National Library. This national library houses copies of every volume in print, including poetry.

The 'National Library Of Poetry' is not part of any government ran agency. Who they are is a private publishing house that runs 'contests' where you submit your poetry to them. The catch is that all poetry, no matter how good or bad, is 'accepted' by them for publication. You have to pay a 'fee' to join their society in order to see your 'free' poem in print in one of their semi-annual books.

This form of publication is not really a scam but close to it. It's called 'vanity' publishing. In 'vanity' publishing the writer actually pays to have their works published. So, when you pay your 'fee' your poem will be published ... along with thousands of other poems crammed tightly into a large volume of poetry. The publisher knows they will sell copies of these volumes because most of those who had their poems 'selected' will got out and buy the books for themselves and their relatives. In fact, the publisher is counting on this happening.

It's not illegal, but sometimes I think it should be.
