Welcoming you to Sydney!

Rental accommodation here isn't the greatest, In the heart of the city it can get very pricey depending on what you are looking for. For a one bedroom place about $300 as close as ashfield which is 20 minutes from the city. At the moment the media is all over the "Sydney Rental Crisis" and it is pretty bad. sometimes they hold auctions just for weekly rent and people try to bid eachother out just to pay rent! I live an hour away close to the Blue Mountains which takes almost two and a half hours by public transport to get to Sydney but for my two bedroom apartment which is quite sizeable I pay $170 and that's alright.

Also try www.domain.com.au, I am currently looking for a house there but I did notice a rental secion there as well.

The cost of living varies greatly in Sydney depending on where you live. Generally, the closer to the city, and water views, the more expensive it is.

If you are only travelling (i.e. not intending to live here for years) - you should check out www.gumtree.com.au which has flats to rent or share, often by people in the same boat, and a little cheaper than going through a real estate. It also has other categories such as "Community" and "Stuff for Sale" to help you with furniture, events, sports etc.

You should be able to access some newspapers online, Sydney Morning Herald is online at www.smh.com.au - so you can read all about Sydney before you arrive :)

Go to http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?s=nsw&t=ren&snf=rbs&a=sf - put in your search criteria and hit search.

You'll get a great idea what you get for your money for 1-2 bedroom, furnished or unfurnished, apartments, homes etc

** make sure you click search by price also - otherwise you'll end up with the apartment prices from $1500 upwards !!
