I am looking to invest several thousand dollars a year in several diversified stocks, and I am wondering which broker is the best. I would like to do it online, but I am not sure who to go with. Which one is the best etrade, charles schawb, scot trade or somebody else?? Thanks

You mention dollars, so I assume you are American.

In the UK, the following two are the ones I use:-

1. For shares: TD WaterHouse (www.tdwaterhouse.co.uk)
a) Up to 20 day settlement
b) Low online commission of £11.95 for frequent traders.
c) Give very good credit (twice holding and thrice cash)
d) Very good limit order facility; usually met.

2. IG Markets for CFDs (www.igmarkets.com)
a) Only 0.1% commission
b) No Stamp Duty
c) Excellent order type facilities (Limit [day and date], iceberg, market, at open, at close, etc.
d) Excellent limit order meeting facility (even if price is reached for a few secs, it is met)
e) Brilliant charting software with candlestick, line, hitogram, etc.; changeable total period + interval; horizontal/vertical line drawing; support/resistance lines, etc.

I am sure these can be used by foreign clients, too, but you would need to check the tax situation. Both companies permit purchase of international stocks (LSE, Dow Jones, German DAX, French CAC, etc.)

Hope this helps.

Zecco I have NEVER recommended and NEVER will. They have too many issues plus their lack of response to questions makes me uneasy.

As for who it all depends on what you would like to do etrade has one of the better apy's on having money laying around before you decide to make a purchase. Scottrade is the easiest to set up and get ACH going, Schawb is supposed to be dependable but really haven't worked with them.

Best adivce just see what each one offers and go from there.
