I have seen some newer housing developments offering that as an option for their homes. I live in the south.

I grew up in Texas, and except for west Texas, there aren't many basements at all. In a large portion of Texas, it's only a couple of feet through topsoil down to solid rock, and most homeowners can't afford the cost to get through that to have a basement. It's a shame, too - I would think it would be SOOOO much cooler to have a basement in the summer!

Most houses are built on Pier and Beam structures... and dont have basements...

however the Newer built houses have the option of putting them in...
