Free Masonry was very spread during XVIII and XIX century. It was a sort of international club, very used by acculturate people, nobles and so on. With "Secret sign" you can find easily contacts among the upper classes of any country or city. The Marquise of La Fayette was a Free Mason, and maybe it had been a good contact for Jefferson and Franklin for contacting politics ruling France. But reason for him to support American revolution was not only in common brotherhood. France wanted a revenge against UK after the seven year war, that pulled France away from Canada. Also the freedom and Independence feeling of borning America was similar to the ones of Illuminists in France, so spread in that moment. Also, for La Fayette, Young and full of life in that moment, I wouldn't underestimate the look for glory and adventure.....
