this is the site i use for travelling on the trains in Melbourne. I use it often and find it very useful. It lets you know if any of the trains are not running or any disturbances there are

public transport, (trains, trams & busses) are loose from 3pm on New Years Eve, and proceed to be that way till around i think of five or 6 am on New Years Day. Have an excellent new Years.

beware of delay. serious issue in melbourne!
also, beware of crowd during peak hour and before/after the footy game.

"Transportation" was the sentence given to many early settlers in Australia by British courts. The word still means that here. Use "transport" instead.
