Do they imply a different level of "closeness" ?

Absolutely! Holding hands is something I share only with my boyfriend, it is intimate and personal. Walking arm in arm is something to show that the person is "escorting" you or that you are good friends with someone. I love to walk with interlocked fingers with my boyfriend, it is a way to show the world we love each other!

It doesn't make a great deal of difference, but hand-holding is bit more intimate and implies a greater level of closeness.

I don't know about anybody else but I see hand holding as something that children are more likely to do and the arm in arm form of walking is the adult's version of hand holding.

I feel like when I am arm and arm with a man it is more intimate. There are many more parts of your body touching, like your hips and sometimes your legs when you walk. I can feel his bicep with the hand holding on to his arm and with my other hand I can touch his chest while I put my head on his shoulder.

I would say yes, there is a difference. Hand-holding is more intimate; I feel it says "here, i trust you" more than arm in arm does.

It is just closeness. It is according to position as you walk you cannot have arm in arm because it will not be convenient and confer table where as on bed it is both possible.
