How about splitting it in half, and giving half to the republicans, and half to the dems? Cuz it seems that in our quest to be free, we have segregated ourselves, except that instead of just by skin color, we are now splitting into either the "fluffy clouds and flower smellers", or the "if you don't like it get outers". (I'm going to stay here with them incidentally)

OK... as long as there are artless lackeys with Bush Derangement Syndrome like mild_irritant around, it will never be just one party.
However, Common Sense... it COULD become one party and still be a representative democracy.
We would simply not have two separate elections... a primary and a general. There would ONLY be one... and it would just be the election.
Realize that the two parties we have right now are not the same two we started out with.
Where have the Whigs gone?
For that matter, where have the Democrats gone?
Today it's the Republicans and the Moveon.org Liberals.
I can't wait for the real Democrats to re-take their party!
In the meantime, this is what we have... unless the treason continues from the likes of Pelosi and Howard Dean... and the Democratic Party gets disbanded!

No the splitting would happen. There are people in every state that go all different ways, no one wants to get rid of their land just because the majority of people around them like certain politicians. If it did happen it would work for a few years, then people's children would like something else and so on until they were two countries with the same problems as our one has now.

I think we are already there. We've had Bush, Clinton, Bush and now most likely Clinton again. The special interests are controlling BOTH SIDES and getting what they want. We now have a dynasty. That's what a one party system is.
It would be great if Ron Paul could break this log jam.

We already do have a one party system.
The illusion of a two party system is just that, a total illusion. It is a clever way to keep the population thinking that they have "choice", when reality they are both two arms of the same beast.
The Democrat powers seek to control the world through big government, and police state tactics....they put "State" (government) in place of God.
The Republicans are there to get the rest of the population on board through the use of religion.
One arm is secular one arm is religious/fascist, but they are working towards the same goal, be sure of that.

I'm beginning to think it already does... the media is literally picking the next presidential candidates by shutting out Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich... the only two candidates for real change.

How about a no party system. We have the candidates debate issues instead of the actions of others in the past.

If this is the USA then the dirty secret is that it is already a one party system. The same people control both parties . The politicians are just stooges to fool the public.
