Some are exciting but some are most definitely downright terrifying. It doesn't even appear to matter what the content of the dream is; a random object can incite abject fear if portrayed in the right light during a nightmare. I've been awakened with a start and realised I was petrified over a dream about a window with nothing in it or a door that wouldn't shut! It's all a matter of what your mind wishes to make of it.

For some people, if you can manipulate your dreams and you KNOW that you are dreaming they can be kinda fun
