okay first you need to double the price:

2 times $53 = $106.

then subtract 8%. remember if you subtract 8% of something, you will be left with 92% of the original amount.

so 92% of $106 = 0.92 times 106 = $97.52.

an alternative method, is to actually work out 8% of the amount, then subtract it manually.
8% of $106 = 0.08 times 106 = $8.48
so $106 - $8.48 = $97.52

both methods are just as good

The roundtrip fare is double the one-way fare, minus an 8% discount. So the fare is 92% of double the one-way fare.

$53*2*0.92
$106*0.92
$97.52

one way = 53.00
an 8% discount is the same as paying 92% of the price rather than 100%, multiply the $106.00 by 0.92 to get the final price, like this:
final round trip cost = 2(53.00) * 0.92 = $ 97.52

if one way costs $53 or (x=53), then the round trip (y) would cost :

y=(1-.08)2x
y= .92(2)(53)
y= $97.52

2*$53.00=$106.00
The fare is $106.00*(1-0.08)=$97.52
