I'm not sure I agree with your MacBeth refrence, as MacBeth was clearly not a hero, he was an anti-hero.
Hamlet, however, was a tragic Hero, as he was fighting for the right, but all of his actions led to tragedy.
Some might see President Bush in this, as his actions have led to tragedy as well; I cannot agree, as he is no hero, and acts only for his own advancement, and the profit of his cronies.
In fact, I have a hard time thinking of anyone to consider a 'hero' in todays world, unless you are will to consider the mundane, like sports hero's.
Che Guevera might have qualified, dead these forty some odd years. He certain seemed well meaning, though the results were not always what he had hoped I suspect.
Maybe Ralph Nader? Yes, I guess I would go with good old Ralph; he was certainly always well meaning, but there is something sad about what he has become. That's my answer...

The most tragic hero I can think of is that poor woman who tried to save her kids and died with them.
You might remember the incident. The two year old got himself out of his car seat and put the van into gear. The mother chased after it, was even dragged by the van so badly that her shoes were torn off, but couldn't stop it. She died in the van with the children when the van went into the lake.
She tried. God, how she tried. She is the very definition of a tragic hero. May she rest in peace.

A "TRAGIC HERO", for today?
ONE name, - immediately, - springs to my mind, - and THAT is the recently-deceased JANE TOMLINSON. She was told, at a remarkably-YOUNG age, - that she had CANCER, - AND, that the illness was TERMINAL. But, - DID she WEEP for herself?
NO, - she did NOT! She spent the last years of her life raising both "AWARENESS" of the disease, - along with VAST sums of money, for RESEARCH.
THAT makes her a TRUE BRITISH HERO, - in the "REAL" sense of the word "HERO"!
The FACT that she DIED makes her HEROISM, VERY TRAGIC, indeed!
