I know what I heard about Fidel Castro from the cuban kids that I went to school with all through the 70's.
They ALL were fed the Same Delusional CRAP by their "grandparents" who escaped Castro. They ALL were told how Castro stole their family's land and fortunes. They fed the fires of their own cuban hubris and convinced their kids that they came from some kind of "uber class" of Iberian nobility and that some day those kids should try to reclaim that status.
THAT is why today you have a bunch of American born cuban A-sshats who NEVER stepped ONE foot in Cuba trying to lobby our government and force Cuba to cough up land or money to these same cuban families!!!
In Fact, the Only thing those Geezer Cubans DIDN'T teach their kids and grandkids about, was how Batista (the two-bit Dictator they Supported) savaged the Cuban people and Created an environment that someone like Castro could take advantage of and Take power!
...And for the record, Cubans you see arriving on our shores today are NOT looking for land or money from Cuba. They just want freedom! The truth is, Castro IS a ba-stard but he's a ba-stard the older generation of cubans brought on THEMSELVES!!!!!

He has been amusing, if you don't have to live under his rule that is. He pulled a good one on us. We helped him into Cuba with the belief he was freedom minded, as he lead us to believe, then immediately switch gears.
Another occasion,I think in the 70's, we told him we would take some of his starving. He emptied his prisons and sent them over.
Unfortunately, he is also responsible for letting his people starve, murder and more. Do I hate him? He is a self gratifying, cruel dictator. I don't like the guy and will be glad when he is no longer in hopes that the Cuban people can establish some kind of reasonable, just government.

G-Man, you're a historical revisionist. I am compelled to correct your anti-Cuban propaganda.
"He took over Cuba by killing all opposition" - He was the opposition, pinhead. It was the revolutionaries who were killed by your beloved fascists.
"He killed thousands in the first year and jailed all dissenters" - complete B.S.
"He put down the revolt known as the Bay of Pigs incident" - This so called "revolt" was in fact a foreign invasion of Cuba, planned and directed by the USA, using former members of Batista's brutal squads. It was a great victory that these fascists were defeated.
"He allowed the Soviets to almost cause a nuclear war with the US" - It was the US that were about to start World War 3. War may have happened had the Soviets not backed down and removed the missiles.
The hypocrisy of the situation is that the US already had missiles in Turkey, right next to the Soviet border. You didn't see the Soviets about to start a war over it. It they had, you can bet that the US weren't going to back down.

I was going to answer, but G-Man basically hit it on the head.
I would add that if he were any good, there would not be so many risking their lives to try to make it to American shores for asylum.
beatle...before you go blaming our government...ask a Cuban refugee. Ask an Iranian immigrant. My best friend immigrated from Iran 5 years ago. Most of his family is still there. I have spoken in length about Ahmedine-jihad with him. He says that the media is absolutely wrong about him. He told me that Ahmendine-jihad is far worse than any politician or media story has ever said. In his words "Americans do not have it in them to even begin to understand the evil in the Iranian president." Do not even go there about the media demonizing him. Compared to the truth, the media makes him out to be a saint.

I think that is enough.

Fidel Castro sold his principles to the Soviet Union in order to keep the US from interfering in his policies or overthrow him. That's what I dislike about him.
I was impressed with his ideals and his education in his early endeavors but in the final analysis power corrupted him.

Ran the mafia and organized crime out of Cuba, but got caught in the superpower struggle as pawn in either sides game, he's done well considering the forces arrayed against him, a wee bit too bombastic for his own good early on.
