I don't think you pretty much have a choice. The only way to 'lie' to yourself is by doing something against your value system, but trying to make an excuse for it which will make you feel less embarrassed about it. Say, you want to lose weight and then you eat an ice cream outside of your diet. You know eating it is wrong before you do it, so you make up a mental excuse like 'One ice cream won't hurt' or 'I'm really hungry right now'. It's an example of a mental trick to fool your own ego and it happens more often than we think.

And if you mean, how to be true to oneself? By not being acquiescent, understanding that it's important to stick to your values and don't have to say 'yes' to people every time when you really believe the right way is your way. You are also true to yourself when you don't follow a trend or become part of a group just because others do it. You are true to yourself when you have the courage to be yourself, even if it means being different.

First of all you need to be honest with your self. You should not degrade yourself in anyway. Always think positive and act positive. Have a healthy diet along with a some exercise. Be socially active but not too active. Be in contact with people of treat you nice because in that sort of a company, one feels loved and nice.

You can always find a hobby that you like and pass your time like that. Never think negatively about your own self. In my opinion that's the worst thing one can do to oneself.

I hope this helps you. Cheers !1

Honesty is only as good as what you perceive the truth to be. Know what is right and what is wrong. Do what is right to others and for yourself. That is always a good starting point. It is not always an easy thing to do. Truth hurts many times. How we deal and react to truth affects our lives as well. Be loving and kind to others but don't forget yourself in that equasion. You are your own best friend. You are there for you for your entire life. You need to be honest and truthful for yourself. Otherwise, how will you recognize it when it comes your way? In the form of another person?

You have to first know yourself, before you can be true or honest to yourself. I doubt many people under 30 have enough self-awareness or life experience to really have a strongly developed sense of self. For people younger than that, I'd say find out who or what you want to be, then be true to that image.

I think when Socrates said "A life without cotemplation is a life not worth living" is how one is honest with themselves. One must constantly assess themselves and contemplate where their life is going. If one does not cotemplate one can not improve.
