I personally believe there is something morally wrong in making a profit from someone else's being ill.

I don't favor socialized medicine--but that's probably what we're going to get.
Why is simple. The problems of the health care system can be solved--but to do so requires a bipartisan reform effort. And--so far, the only thing the right has had to contribute is political slogans and ideological rhetoric.
That is not good enough. When people need medical care, they will not care about the political slogans. They will take what is available.
There is no reason we have to have socialized medicine. But unless the Republicans start coming up with real policy proposals, not more slogans--that is what we are going to get. And the "fault" won't be the liberal left. It will be a right wing that abandoned their responsibility as citizens to join in a real debate with real ideas. If we get socialized medicine--it wil be because the conservatives in America defaulted on this responsibility.

i need to do some research on the subject but I had to put my two cents worth in. i know i dont want to pay thru the nose to get private insurance where i'll pay 2-300 a month and get nothing out of it. drs office visits run about $30 a pop and when you come out you feel like u got ripped off specially if its just for an antibiotic. I want quality checkups, great doctors and medicine that wont kill my wallet. My child also deserves the best my money can buy, but dont shoot the parents because they cant make enough money to pay for the $400 deductible. But if the family cant pay for the whole bill, where does that leave the balance? When over half this country cant pay for decent health care, why jack up the prices on a visit if its impossible to pay for it to start with?? We complain that fast food is the only way to eat. Fast food might be a lot easier and faster but when was the last time anyone calculated the amount you spend on fast food and think what you could have bought at the grocery store with the same money? Its all in the choices we make everyday. Do we want fast and easy, or do we take the time to make a decent meal with fresh ingredients? Thats why all those fast food places are going with healthier alternatives. We complain the tobacco companies are killing us.... Who is smoking the products they make? Isnt there a healthier way to relieve stress? Exercise, read a book, get a hobby. I am a smoker and I feel more weighed down when I do it. But its something I need to wean myself off of. If we want to be a healthier country, we need to start by realizing what it is we're doing wrong. Dont blame the govt for their wrongdoings. I'm not saying their not to blame but we as people have a lot to do ourselves in the daily choices we make. Its common sense, greasy burger and fattening fries, or a nice grilled chicken with a salad on the side? Personally grilled chicken tastes better without all that grease. Start with yourself before you start bashing the govt. And stop smoking that cig!!! How much do you spend on smokes a week? How much do you spend on drs office visits because your having trouble breathing? Sorry its so long but people use your heads, make better healthier choices.

I don't have a problem with it and I tend to vote Republican... it is not my first choice but since this nation's government will not somehow reform the private insurance companies practices then I think we should seriously consider universal healthcare.
I personally don't see this step as socialism... socialized but it is not some sort of revolution, that kind of talkking is ridiculous. I lived in the Czech Republic (a much more free economy than the United States) for several years (I am a born American citizen) and I qualified for their national healthcare and beneffited from it. There weren't lines and the care was very good... nations like Canada, the UK and the French actually have systems that rival the United States' system and actually beats us out on many services (don't believe me? look at www.who.org). Premiums from private insurance here are extremely expensive to both individuals and employers... and will get the same services for more money spent.
The only people that profit are the insurance companies and the physicians. Doctors would probably have to take less money but they will still make more money than the average citizen (this is true in all nations with universal healthcare). We would also be paying less in property taxes in large counties because a lot of the taxes in large metropolitan areas actually go to public healthcare hospitals anyway.
People should really be considering all the factors in this type of system instead of just dismissing it as "socialism". We should consider the economics of this if we aren't willing to see the good of caring for all people.
BTW, I am not saying we should actually go this way but we should consider ALL the options. The current system is not really working if we are spending more money and getting less.

People have no clue what they are getting into with socialized medicine. It isn't just about the higher taxes. The service will drop dramatically in these following ways...
The government will decide what you need as far as health care goes. And when they look at the budget.... simple things will start to be ignored and uncovered.
They won't be able to afford the full cost of health care. We see this with Medicare now. People need to buy supplimental plans on top of what they have paid into Medicare.
The US produces over 80% of new drugs and medical proceedures in the world. It will no longer be profitable for these companies and doctors to research these areas. Other countries benefit because we produce it.
You will be put on waiting lists to have proceedures done as the amount of doctors will diminish in one of two ways.... Future doctors might choose another field to go into that will be profitable for them. Why spend 8 - 12 years in school, hundreds of thousands of dollars and struggle during that period just to be paid what the government "deems" fair for your professional skill set.
or... most of the talented doctors will simply stay within the private sector. So if you would like to see a good specialist... prepare to shell out more cash either directly to the doctor or to a "suplimental" insurance program.
Now your costs do rise.
Finally, does anyone think the government does a great job with their current social programs? Good luck collecting social security if your less than 40 years old and funny how the age of qualification keeps rising???
Remember how you were dying to get out from your parents roof so you could DO IT ON YOUR OWN? How about starting with those thoughts and vigor?

Answer: Be Honest...You cannot trust the Fed to deliver your mail...private interests do it better and for less. Anything that goes federal costs more and delivers less than the private sector.
Has anyone else mentioned the months long wait for services in socialized country's.
Try this prospective, there are more M.R.I.units operating in the city of Atlanta Ga. than in the entire of the U.K.

how about sozialized stop making everyone so fat? give the kids some frutis and vegetables and get them outside playing. turn off the stupid tv and read a book or go for a walk through the park. stop making junk food the only thing we have to eat in this country. there are parts of this country that are virtually a desert because all there is to eat is cream puffs and ho ho's. there are parents so stupid and lazy who dont know anything about health or real nutrition and they pass these bad habits down to their fats kids who end up needing healthcare.
no, dont raise my taxes. okay, im not the one doing the ******* and its not my job to pay for everyone elses stupid mistakes. there are better things we could be doing with our money than spending it all on healthcare, especially when healthcare doesnt address the real problem of people being too fat, lazy, and stupid. in fact, it will just make the problem worse.

Republicans keep on talking about how universal health care is socialist, but they seem to have no problem with Medicare. If we can have Medicare in this country, I dont see why it would be a big deal to extend that to everybody. Maybe if Republicans actually thought about people other than themselves for a couple minutes, they would realize that milions of people in this country cant afford health care.

there are plenty of reasons to oppose socialized medicine, but you already hit the biggie. the government screws up almost everything it touches, and it will screw up health care as well. in england, where they have socialized medicine, they're trying to force women to give natural births because c-sections and anethesia is getting too expensive for the system. certain things, like vericose veins, go untreated because the government has decided it isn't important enough. they can't even go pay to get help unless they leave the country.
plus, our constitution clearly spells out what the federal government can and can't do, and clearly it can't run health care. so if you're one who supports nationalized health care, first thing you have to do is spit on the constitution, admit the founders of this country were wrong, and admit that freedom is far from priority #1.
