no way, thats why i dont like cartoons/shows that show a turtle taking its shell off like its nothing. turtles shells are fused to their skeleton, it would very much kill them if you removed it. and yes they can feel you touching their shell, also.

Turtles Without Shells

2016-10-04 04:57:37 · answer #2 · answered by bedlion 4 · 0 0

The shell is actually the rib cage, breast bone, and parts of the pelvis of the turtle. The shell is a big part of a turtle and is an important part of its skeleton. The turtle's spinal cord runs through small holes in the inside of the shell.

The bony part of the shell is covered with skin and tough tissues, and it can loose SOME of these scales without dying, it does usually cause the turtle stress or illness.

There is no way to remove the shell from a turtle and have it live.

RE:
can turtles survive without their shell?

No, the body is attached to the shell along with vital organs that are needed to live. Many people believe because of cartoons turtles can get out of there shells and this has led to many owners without information trying to pry them out and end killing there turtles.

No, they need them for protection. Also, the shell is attached to the turtle (it's like it's skeleton) so it would kill the turtle if you even attempted to remove it from it's shell.

No, they would not even survive the removal of their shell. It is attached to their body and it would take their skin off. In addition, their spine is attached to the underside of the shell. However, they can survive a quite large hole in their shell if it gets proper treatment.

Hmm... remove their spine and ribcage? Those are fused into the shell, so no... you would sever the spinal cord while removing the shell... true, it might not die right away, but between blood loss, stress, shock, and pain overload among other horrible things, it would definitely not survive.

I don't think so. The shell is an extension of their backbone/ribcage. If you removed it, it would expose a lot of tissue and the turtle would definitely die.

NO, they cannot detach from their shell. It's part of their body. It grows just like everything else does. A lot of people don't know this.
