I was around in the 1970s so here are some of the artists I used to hear. I'll list the one song I remember hearing the most by them:

Tonly Orlando & Dawn - Tie A Yellow Ribbon (Around The Ole Oak Tree)
The Osmonds - One Bad Apple
Helen Reddy - Delta Dawn
Cher - Half-breed
The DeFranco Family - Heartbeat - It's A Heartbeat
Gallery - It's So Nice To Be With You
David Cassidy - How Can I Be Sure
The Partridge Family - I Think I Love You
The Stories - Brother Louie
Three Dog Night - Joy To The World
The Bee Gees - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart
Five Man Electrical Band - Signs
Steely Dan - Reeling In The Years
Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Jackie Blue
Ace - How Long
The Amazing Rhythm Aces - Third Rate Romance
Don't Give Up On Us - David Soul
Let Her In - John Travolta
Barry Manilow - Mandy
Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life
Kenny Nolan - I Like Dreaming
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light
Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight
John Denver - Annie's Song
Bay City Rollers - Saturday Night
C.W. McCall - Convoy
Peaches & Herb - Reunited
Robert John - Sad Eyes
Rupert Holmes - Escape
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
The Eagles - Hotel California
Bob Seger - Main Street
Abba - Waterloo
Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died

Notice that I've tried to stay away from disco as much as possible? These are some of the songs that I actually used to hear. Except for Donna Summer and a few others, disco songs didn't really get played all that much on the radio.

Grab a copy of Saturday Night Fever (sound track), grab a copy of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, grab a copy of Jim Croce ("Bad Leroy Brown" etc), grab a copy of America ("Horse with No Name"), grab a copy of ELO (gotta have "Evil Woman")... those are some examples. The 70's time period was a time period where we were getting out of a war (Vietnam) that had become controversial, the soldiers were being treated like crap to be honest, and everyone wanted something that reached down into the soul to just get out of it all.... then the disco era jumped in. In the early 70's the music was structured towards escaping. Even the hard rock such as Janis Japlin (another one you may want). It then phased into disco and then we drifted off into the early 80's and music like Madonna (big hair and clothes with alot of zippers, break dancing and movies like "The Breakfast Club".) We ended up leaving the escape mode, into the disco mode and the next thing you knew the majority of the population was escaping the escape idea and found themselves reaching for the conservative approach. Hope you have fun and thanks for reminding me of just how old I have become.... Take Care ....... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

BTW you can get a 70's collection at alot of music stores for old people like me LOL
