Purpose being making laws and protecting the Constitution. Going beyond would be spying on it's citizens without a warrant or just cause for doing that spying.
No, I don't have anything to hide, but that is not justification for people searching for a reason to spy on it's citizens. Last time I looked the United States of America wasn't spelled "China"...just because our businesses were sent there doesn't mean that our rights go right along with them!

Tenth...They are not in my mind. Bush point blank said and agreed to the illegal wire taps that they have been doing. Quit drinking the koolaid. And further more, I am a liberal and want ALL my rights protected...INCLUDING THE SECOND.

Tinker...The "Patriot" act has not done anything except take away are rights as citizens. Now, I can see how Hitler came into power. All you have to do is make the people afraid and pretend like you are the only one to protect them.
THESE ARE NOT THE BELIEFS THAT THE USA WAS FOUNDED ON. No, wonder why people are saying they are no longer proud to be an American. What pride is there in living the life of FEAR?

American citizens are not " idiots " they have become complacent - there's a difference . People need to study history because before Hitler got power , he had to destroy the Constitution { yes Germany had a Constitution which was alot similar to our own } they had the same thoughts as we do currently , that there country was going to turn into a police state . But they let it happen without rising up against the government because they believed what there leaders told them and they were scared for there lives of another terrorist attack like the burning of Reichstag among other things . So the people went along with it , the sad part is the Germans beliefs were right - There country did turn into a police state and once that happened they couldn't revolt without being killed , they had to put up with whatever the government wanted . Years later it was revealed that the Germans bombed there own Reichstag and blamed it on a peasant , the Germans shot a Jewish man in a polish army uniform to make it appear the almighty German state was being attacked by Poland , I could go on and on . The real question should be - Will America follow Germans path ? Some say it already has , personally I will never live in a Police State and if that did happen in America I would have to revolt or die .

I think the first thing we can do is donate and support and vote for Ron Paul. He is very aware what the corrupt government is doing and has planned. This would be the peaceful attempt to change the direction of this government, for no one else running is speaking of the rights being removed or the truths of our crisis.
If that fails we will have to move into action. This would be the non peaceful method. We the people have the power we have to believe it. Gather in masses, millions go against the system in ways that will take us off our couches and in the streets.Protests and work sit outs. For one week we the people must not fear consequences and all across the US we flood the streets no one going to work. Surround government buildings with anger, federal reserve banks, Fbi buildings, CIA
buildings,Police stations, court houses, Warn that we will not accept arrest or force without force in return.
Extreme as it might sound it is what the founders and forefathers did for us to ensure we had a lawful system for the people. They could have said "you cant fight the powers that be" and stay complacent, comfortable without any sacrifice
but they knew that would not yeild anything but more tyranny so they died for a cause that now we take for granted and sit back watching our freedoms expire.
We are the ones we have been waiting for.
For the power of information which we all need look below. Empowered we are dont let them say we are not.

Wusthof and Henckel are excellent knives, but pricey. They are good for chopping. Bunmei and Mac are Japanese knives that are excellent for slicing. The Wusthof and Henckel knives are German. Dexter-Russell is an American knife that is used in many resturants - it is good also. Another good knife is a Lamson-Sharp. Once you select a knife it is important to get a good "steel".The best are ones' with diamond dust. Wusthof is best. Every serious cook uses an 8 inch chef's knife. The second knife is a 21/2 inch paring knife or 3 inch paring knife,it's your choice. The third knife is a 10 or 12 inch slicer. With these 3 knives you can handle about anything prepared in the average home. Get in the habit of using the steel on the knives each time you use it . It hones them it doesn't sharpen them. It (the steel) sets the edge on a knife. But like any other tool it has to be maintained (this is where you have a professional do the sharpening). Every year or so have a professional sharpen your knife. A dull knife will cut you, a sharp knife will cut the item you're working with.

The Federal Government's purpose is to defend and protect, not make laws. Laws are the business of the states. Only when a state legislates contrary to the constitution does the Fed. Government step in. Unfortunately, they have forgotten it is not their job and we have let them get buy with it. AND it didn't start with Bush. I would love to blame Clinton, but it didn't start with him either.
fateridder - Your history is correct and it is a lesson we all need to keep in mind. I do hope you are not implying that Bush attacked the towers, and trade center, and the navy ship and, and, and....We have so much more to fear from congressmen who would have us become a socialist country and try to hold hands with countries that mean to destroy us. I really don't think we have ever had such a mess in congress than we have had over the past 16 years and it gets worse every year.
The government does not order toys from China, business does that. The citizens tell business what they want with their spending. If we refused to buy products from China, business would find another way to produce their product.
The government manages/controls imports by imposing higher or lower taxes on certain products or from certain countries. Still, the consumer is in control. If we buy 'made in china', business continues to buy and sell.
The question was once posed 'are you willing to pay more for products'. The answer is yes. And that answer applies to everyone of us. If we have no alternative, we will pay. Gas sales have not slowed down. Americans have cut back on the unnecessary items instead. If we want it, we will pay for it.

I'm not American. But I was excited to learn about American history in high school. I understood and respected the constitution.
Currently I don't see America projecting those constitutional values in their government.
If it gets to the point where the people need to revolt to bring down their government (because right now it is excercising power beyond what was granted to it by the people), I will stand with you!

I don't understand how people can actually believe it is right to give up ANY civil liberties for the sake making us safer. Retroactive warrants weren't fast enough? Makes me believe they were listening to what the should not have been. What has been done in the last 6 years to make us safer? Harass little old ladies and children and Cat Stevens at the airport? Please, the government has already overstepped it's bounds and it is time to look at why the people have let it happen. Too many people care about Britney and OJ to care about our country. If the same amount of people voted in an actual election that vote for American Idol, we may not be in this mess. Educate ourselves and vote for the best, not the monkeys!

Great question. What do we the people do? I think we just sit there and take it. That's what we've been doing for the past 80 years!
The US Federal government has waaaaaaaaaaay overstepped its bounds.
The reason is, the citizens are idiots.
We need to educate our fellow citizens.

"In a democracy, the people always get the government they deserve."
"We the people" had better realize this and get our butts to the election booths in far greater numbers than in the past - or we'll have no one to blame but ourselves for the poor representation and lame policies coming out of Capital Hill.
