Universities often give more consideration to students whose parents attended school there, or donated large sums of money, or are prominent people. But there's no formula (like "5" whatever that means). The fact is that many of the students who apply to top universities have nearly identical qualifications- very high grades, challenging courses in high schools, extracurricular activities, etc. None of them are more qualified than any of the others. But the university can only accept a certain number of students. So there are things that can give some an edge. But if you are not qualified, no amount of money is going to make any difference. Yes, they consider the high school you went to. But it's not a matter of private over public. 67% of the freshman class at Harvard last year came from public schools. The admissions officers know that a student in the top 10% at one high school might only be in the top 25% at another school (mostly that has to do with the socioeconomic status of the students at the school). So they take that into consideration. College admissions are not an exact science. Admissions officials are trying to predict who will be successful at their university. That's a combination of academic achievement, motivation, time management and other hard to identify qualities. Sometimes it's a matter of how well you will fit in with the other students there, since they don't want unhappy, lonely, suicidal students. Sometimes a school is just not right for an individual no matter how qualified the student is. My daughter visited one excellent school where the general atmosphere was very intense, politically and academically. It was not the right school for her. I steered her to a school where the academics were just as good, but the students were less angry and depressed!
