Natural sponges (the kind that live in the oceans, I mean) feed by filtering water. The holes allow them to pass water through their bodies, and they have special cells inside that capture and digest small water-borne animals.

None of this rubbish about absorbing water. Although marine sponges do have to contend with the fact that the water in which they live is hypertonic (and therefore tends to draw water from their cells), absorbing water is not the reason they have pores.

The Sponge has a hollow body and the many holes are lined by cells bearing flagellae which whip up the water , and bring a stream of food particles in. The body walls are strengthened with protein,or small spikes of silica, or a framework of calcium carbonate.

Are you referring to the animals, or the cleaning product? Sponges (the animal) have holes because they are filter feeders. This is how they eat.
Kitchen sponges have holes because they are copies of the real, live sponges, and it was found that they work better with holes.

Sponges are filter feeders. They need a lot of incurrent pores all over their sides to take in water that contains the microscopic food particles. Usually there is one larger excurrent pore at the end. So the holes are for feeding, as well as gas exchange.
