The potential causes of stress are numerous and highly individual. What you consider stressful depends on many factors, including your personality, general outlook on life, problem-solving abilities, and social support system. Something that's stressful to you may not faze someone else, or they may even enjoy it. For example, your morning commute may make you anxious and tense because you worry that traffic will make you late. Others, however, may find the trip relaxing because they allow more than enough time and enjoy listening to music while they drive.

The pressures and demands that cause stress are known as stressors. We usually think of stressors as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky relationship. However, anything that forces us to adjust can be a stressor. This includes positive events such as getting married or receiving a promotion. Regardless of whether an event is good or bad, if the adjustment it requires strains our coping skills and adaptive resources, the end result is stress.

Certainly, genetics has something to do w/ it, but environment--the way we are raised, the temperament of our siblings and parents, even the presence of animals in our house can all affect how stressed we feel under certain situations.

Further, the person's self-esteem and self-assuredness will factor into stress--how well can I handle this? Oh, I'm an old hand at this.

Also, the way a person physically takes care of himself plays a part--junk food with blood sugar going up and down, exercise chilling you out, prayer, meditation, and the proximity of family and friends who can talk to you or take part of your burden so you can relax. How much you relax and how much qt you spend with your family, too.

So what is the #1 reason I think that people like me get stressed? Personality.

Some people handle stress better because of the way they perceive the stressful event. The way they view it, think about it will determine how upset they will get with the event. If they personalize something, or believe that the event is catastrophic-even if it isn't, they will get more upset than the person who says "I can get through this".
