App State! NEVER had a Div 1AA beat a Ranked Div 1 team (add to it that Michigan was a top 5 team)!
You would think that a team ranked 20th or so would fall victim!
A Number 1 loses to an unranked conference opponent every third year or so!

Stanford because while no one has really heard about App State before, they were still a great division 2 team that was just undermined for not being known. Stanford only notched one win last year, a feat that is a dubious honor. Routinely routed in years past, Stanford came out of no where and walloped a team that Stanford's own coach called "..the best team in college football history...". With that much against Stanford, it's hard to say a successful div. 2 school beating a Michigan team that struggled in the beginning of the season is a better upset then a team that has had no success in recent years beating a team expected by many to win the national championship.

Appalachian State no doubt, not even close, no contest, It's bad for any team to lose to a 1-AA team, but for the #5 in the nation team to lose to them, completely totally amazing . Someone said that no one would have been surprised if Stanford lost by 40, No one would have been surprised if Appalachian state lost by 70. Looking back it doesn't seem like as much of an upset, but at the time (and it still is) it was the biggest upset EVER.

Stanford. Like stated before, App State was a championship team and Michigan, well, not too spectacular anyway. On paper, but not on the field. You do not really expect Stanford to beat many teams.

App. State..
Stanford has beat USC before.. its shocking but not as shocking as App State. App State was a true David vs Goliath match.

Stanford, definitely.
App State caught everyone by surprise, but Stanford...well, nobody would have been surprised if they lost by 40. We had already seen their body of work so far and it was not good. App State had a hell of a resume..
So my vote is Stanford.

I think Stanford was the bigger upset. They were underdogs by 40 points!
Saying that Appalachian State was the bigger upset is giving U of M too much credit. They are not really in the same caliber of play as USC....that's why I'd argue for Stanford.
