Many things in life can be very enjoyable and lots of fun, but there is always a price to pay with any sort of addiction!!
I've never once touched drugs, never once been tempted - I'm sure I'm missing out on all kinds of wonderful sensations, but I'm also sure that I'm sparing myself from all kinds of horrific side-effects too! One of the side-effects is that drugs can leave you suffering from anxiety attacks, and since I am naturally prone to those anyway, I would certainly not wish to increase this tendency even further!!!
In this world of instant pleasure, I think that one of the greatest secrets on Earth is the precious value of comfort... feeling comfortable is a great blessing afforded only to those who are sensible enough to avoid the modern doctrine of Hedonism! ;)

I think if you're looking for a simple answer to that question you're going to be disappointed. There are many answers that will all be true for different people.
Some will do drugs because drugs alter your perception of reality - this in itself is no bad thing, it's good to think about things in different ways, sometimes you hit revelations.
Some will do drugs because its a form of escapism, it takes you out of yourself, gives you relief from the daily grind of life which can be pretty hard going at times.
Some will do drugs because they feel a need to rebel, and drugs are a fairly established way of doing this.
Some people do drugs because they feel it will improve their performance - I'm including caffeine drinkers, smokers, alcohol users etc. in this
Some people take drugs because they're addicted to them and need the drug to feel 'normal' - again caffeine, nicotein, alcohol, even sugar can be included in this.
Do you see what I mean? You may be able to come up with a different reason for every individual. Maybe "It makes them feel better" is the simplest answer. Of course, that's where the danger lies, feeling better makes the times when you don't feel as good, worse. So you use drugs and the cycle continues. It's usually the side effects that cause a problem.
Just a tip: Question what you know. Do drugs put holes in your brain? Do they kill brain cells? How do you know that? How does whoever told you know? Do they have any reason to not tell the truth, or exaggerate? It's safer to say that drugs are dangerous, we can see the results on our streets, in our friends and families. But try and approach them rationally, and recognise the drugs that are present in your own body and those legal drugs that the government says is okay for people to have - they can actually be pretty bad for you too.

'i used to take drugs, didnt hurt anybody didnt kill any body, i didnt lose one single job and had a really good time!' - bill hicks
i dont know it goes somthing like that.
I think every drug is different and people do them for different reasons. Some are harmful, some arent so harmful. South american tribes have been getting some extraordinary knowledge and wisdom from thier 'teacher plants' for thousands of years, thier cultures are more or less based on this wisdom, check out 'spirit of the shuar' an excellent book.
Other people fry thier minds on ecstacy trying to out do each other on just how wasted they can get. For some people drugs give them a feeling of confidence where others just feel paranoid.
Its got to be a sad state of affairs when a society is dependent en mass on getting thouroughly smashed on a friday and saturday night.
Why do we have to feel the need to cling onto such an activity? Because the week is tough and we need a release. Perhaps if our self esteem was truly intact and we were totally contented in ourselves we wouldnt need stimulation to feel social. IS that why people drink so much, so they feel they can communicate better, be funnier, flow more? Why cant they just do that anyway. IS there anything wrong with getting drunk every so often? if so why? if in moderation its not unhealthy?
Is there anything wrong with taking ecstacy in moderation to feel that feeling and be in that place with all those other people.
Will you want to do it again and again and again until you cause some damage? Which ll be too late!
IS there anything wrong with having the odd out of this world experience on magic mushrooms having picked them naturally your self like people have been doing for thousands of years?
Whats wrong with going for a nice big walk on the weekend through some beautiful scenery and at the end feel truly rested from the claustaphobic life of the week.
Its such a huge grey area really isnt it? so many reasons some good some ok some terrible, i guess it depends on how you want to live, and whether or not you have the appropriate education about what your doing. Im not sure the answer if there is an answer, thats my point of view anyway.
cheers

It can be the same as why do people drink too much alcohol? Firstly because its easily addictive and seen a s a social thing and also because the people concerned have lower inteligence and no willpower.
As well younger people have different role models nowadays and unfortunately these people are seen as cool and if it is reported that they take drugs then too many impressionable people want the same lifestyle. The problem is that so called celebrities nowadays are just idiots woth no morals or respect for law and order and think they can do what they want because they are famous.
Yes taking drugs does make you feel better for a short period but the downside is a lot more harmful. Plus the fact it is ok when you can afford it but as your habit grows and you need more of the stuff to get the same high then you turn to crime to feed the habit and that then hurts normal law abiding people.
For me the only answer is to flood the market with the pure substance and let them overdose themselves. Would save us a lot ot taxpayers money in the long run.

humans like drugs simply because all of them are apparently 'bad for us', their is also the fact that some drugs feel good to the user. their the same reasons why kids eat sweets, even when their parents say that their teeth will fall out.
Everyone knows how bad alcohol can be for us, yet binge drinking exists. people know how bad cigarettes are for us, yet their are people who smoke 20+ a day. fair enough people throw around the word addiction like its the answer to everything, but bare in mind no one is addicted to anything before they try it, so why do people try it in the first place?
At the end of the day their are more people who would rather be happy than their is who would rather be right.
Morals and rules mean nothing to this generation, especially when they can be abused and broken without being caught out.
Also some drugs, such as 'weed' maybe classed as bad in this country, it dosent mean they are; what about places like Amsterdam, where you can order it to your door by legit businesses, or buy some with coffee. Does everyone in Jamaica have 'holes' in their brain?

I would be anybody's friend, I don't presume to judge people by what they do and what they don't put into their systems. Would I encourage others? Depends on who they were and what drug we're talking about. For example, although it's not for everybody, you only live once and not to have experienced mind alteration with something like mescaline or peyote is too bad, because something like that can show you there is more to existence than the nuts-and-bolts of reproducing, raising kids, and going to work every day. Just one example. Do I do drugs? Not right now, no. Have I ever done drugs? Hahahahahahahahahaha

People use drugs for all sorts of reasons, some people do drugs to escape bad times in their life, they see it as a way of dealing with problems but most cases of drugs being used is simply to have a good night out or just getting involved with the wrong groups of people. Drugs are also prescribed in a controlled amount for medicinal purposes

Why do people do drugs? well i will tell you. Being a drug taker myself, the reason behind me doing it is becuase i base my life on experiences and taking drugs is one experience you have got to try in your life. I hate that peoples knowledge of drugs is so poor there are many plus points to taking them in some cases. For instance did you know that cannabis can help with all of these well known diseases? aids, amnesia, arthritis, cancer, depression, epilepsy, herpes, migranes, ms, pms and stress. also there are 24,000 alcohol related deaths a year compared to cannabis which is 9? Anyway the reason that i take drugs is that having not taken them i would not have met the poeple i have or done the things that i have done. Yes there is a danger to your health by taking them but everything these days is bad for you anyway. Its like everything in this world everything in moderation. Although i have taken quite a wide range of drugs i would never do heroin or crack cocaine or crystal meth because that does lead to bad places. Even though i take drugs i have a very good career and no criminal record what so ever. You only have to take a look at the dutch's crime rate to realise that maybe drugs aren't so bad after all.

You are obviously very uneducated about real life. Not all drugs are the same, not all people doing drugs are the same, they do not lead the same types of lives or would have had the same life experiences or would have come from the same background.
Not all crime is related to drugs. Alcohol, fat food are probably more of a strain on government services than drugs.
What's normal these days?
Has the world has changed, have people changed? Is the world more hedonistics now or is it just that due to the increased methods of communication we know more truth about what really goes on in the world.

I can answer that question. I have personally tried quite a few drugs and have not regretted any. You must take into account that the term 'DRUG' is always banded around and connected to illegal drugs. Alcohol and tobacco are 2 of the most harmful drugs on the planet and very legal.
Getting back to the question i must say people including me take drugs in the way a lot of people drink, there is a need for the human race to relax and have fun, this is why i think people try drugs and enjoy them.

I'm not sure about the holes in your brain thing but drugs can certainly be a release any emotion one may be feeling. But ultimately the constant abuse of drugs will lead to your eventual destruction. As for the comparison between other addictive substances like chocolate and caffeine, they're stupid. They don't have the ability to significantly alter a persons personality in the same way that cocaine and heroin will ultimately do. Also this talk of 'individual choice' is nonsense if the abuse starts to become serious and ones family and friends start to become affected? And what about the cost to the state?
