I'm getting my BS-Nursing... and I was thinking about pursing a MBA. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a good idea? What are some career opportunities with these two degrees?

Also, if after I finish my BSN, and then get my MBA... would that allow me to work in a non-hospital setting as well? Somewhere just pursing business?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks :)

Yes, absolutely. The MBA is one program that doesn't require you to have any particular undergrad degree, and people come from many fields, including nursing.

They may require you to take some pre-requisite classes (such as Statistics) if you haven't had them, but that shouldn't cause you too much trouble. What would probably help you is if you do a Business Minor with your Nursing Major, but that's not required either.

And, yes, of course you could go into any field, but I think you'd be highly in demand in Hospital Management fields especially. Overall, I think it's a great idea. However, I'd suggest working for a year or two before you go back to the MBA program....don't just go straight through. The MBA is best after you have a few years of work experience, in any field, under your belt.

Yes, you can! Many MBA programs want people from other non-business disciplines. Some (most) MBA programs require several pre-requisite business courses (e.g. economics, basic accounting, etc.) before applying, whereas other programs incorporate the preliminary courses into their curriculum.

Consider a business minor or get some work experience in nursing and take the basic business courses through your local community college. It works either way. The main thing is to research the program that you want. Some MBA programs are highly quantitative, whereas others are more qualitatively oriented. Whichever program emphasis you choose, a nursing BA and an MBA can be a powerful career combination, whether you choose to go into health care administration, into a corporate life, or start your own business. My advice is to go for it and good luck!

You can get an MBA with any undergraduate degree. If you get an MBA from a ranked program, you can move into any field you like -- including those not in the healt field. An MBA from an unranked program won't help you that much.

The one drawback to all of this is that the top MBA programs want you to have three to five years of work experience.

If your going to be "working for the man" your better off having both. MBA's are dropping from the trees, so having a BSN as well will give you an advantage over the rest of the herd. All the best.
