I want to be a sports writer.

But, I live in a big city, already have a job (that I can't afford to quit), and don't have a lot of free time.

I was a sports broadcaster for 1 year but came back to my hometown because I couldn't afford it. Now that I'm back into the 9 to 5 I'm realizing that I miss journalism.

What steps do I need to take to get back in? And is it even worth it?

I think it's worth it and you should definitely give it a shot. One way that you can ease in and see if you like it is to do some freelance or contributing work first. Go directly to the papers with your resume, or send the resume and call to follow up. (My experience with editors is that they tend to be a bit scatterbrained!) I do contributing work at the moment for two papers and a magazine, and my workload is pretty steady.

If you start out as a contributor, you have the added benefit of being able to keep your current job, and testing the waters for yourself.

Hope that helps!

I studied English Literature and innovative Writing at college in the united kingdom with comparable aspirations to you, all i've got ever relatively had to do is write. the only component i might advise is that a standalone degree in innovative Writing is very constrictive even though it relatively works nicely as a secondary component or minor. evaluate that throughout straightforward terms some human beings be able to get printed and maximum of people who do have not have been given a qualification in innovative writing, so think of roughly what you would be wanting to do in case you probably did no longer get your 'Harry Potter concept'. An English significant does additionally place some regulations on you yet this is a similar with a great form of majors, it in many cases comes right down to the guy modules (credit in u . s .?) which you pick as they nicely impression the way you strengthen. i understand artwork in Banking in spite of the fact that I continuously write and my writing has more suitable from what I discovered in my direction. If I have been to do something otherwise i might in all probability take innovative Writing as a minor and Spanish as a significant. I additionally prefer i might stayed to end a coaching qualification besides earlier getting tied up with marriage and a private loan.

You say you live in a big city. If there are any minor league baseball teams within reasonable distance of that city, you might want to give a shot at covering the games for the big city papers. I know there are many minor league ball parks near large cities now because major league baseball got rid of the 75-mile rule that prevented such a franchise within 75 miles of an MLB park if one wasn't already "grandfathered" in.
