optimism does not make you blind of the bad things. in fact, you see these bad things as something very hard to overcome, and yet, knowing this, you still pursue on your endeavor. that is optimism, i believe you were pessimistic in defining it. everything starts from optimism, you need to have a vision, and it should be positive, coz how else would you succeed if your vision is clouded by negative things? optimism is transforming negative things into something motivating and positive, you use it as your fuel to strive harder. and, only an optimist can do this. when you're an optimist, you have a vision, and everything starts from there, everything follows. ^_^

ignorance= bliss
bliss= confidence
confidence= success

or something like that.
but not really... I don't believe that any extreme is going to get you to the answer you're looking for. But yes, optimism is at least one important part of courage- or at least true courage. There are a lot who just pretend they're "tough" and inside, they're shriveling up. No doubt those are the pessimists.

Where did you get the idea that optimism is the base of courage and pacifism is the base of cowardice? I know some very courageous pacifists, and some very violent cowards.

What does bravery have to do with hoping for the best?

There are many optimists about the iraq war, but they have no courage (of course they might have reasons, but I"m just trying to stick to your question) to become a soldier and help out themselves

I believe freedom+good judgement+will power= courage-stupidity

It's up to you to make that equation life

I don't agree with your premise. I believe that honesty is the base of courage. And cowardice and fear are mostly based on ignorance with a bit of human unpredictability thrown in for good measure.
