because x = -2 you substitute -2 in wherever you see x in the equation.

so f(-2) = |(-2)+3| + 9

first let's do the absolute value. So -2 + 3 = 1. The answer is already positive so we don't have to worry about it, but if it had been -1 then the absolute value of that would be 1.

So then the equation is 1 + 9, since |(-2)+3| = 1

1+9 = 10.

f ( x ) = | - 2 + 3 | + 9
f ( x ) = | 1 | + 9
f ( x ) = 1 + 9
f ( x ) = 10
