US is only the first if you include a written constitution as a prerequisite for a democracy.

Nope, Great Britain was a democracy before the US (though I do admire the US constitution).

No. The United Provinces of the Netherlands who won Independance in 1581 was the first. Its principles of Religious freedoms and tolerance, sharing of provincial and national powers with decentralized government not to mention their constituion influenced the founding of the US and its own constitution

When people speak of "modern democracy", they mean "liberal democracy", not "parliamentary democracy".

Parliamentary democracy is relatively ancient compared to liberal democracy.
