As a person who stays in hotels often, I would hope it was a complete and thorough check!
I don't want criminals cleaning my room.

It depends on the type of hotel, their policies and the type of job you applied for. For instance if you applied for a childcare position they would do a police check regarding any previous sexual offences against children. If you will have access to guests' rooms they would (at least I hope they would!) do a police check also to check for dishonesty offences such as theft and burglary.
Generally administrative and hospitality positions only require a reference check - that is calling people you listed as referees such as an old employer or teacher to ensure that you really have the qualifications and experience you claim. They may also make enquiries regarding your character and abilities.
Generally it is never a good idea to lie on an application - even if it's something seemingly as small as where you went to college. There can be very serious consequences and if you're caught you could be charged with a variety of fraud offences - and trust me any dishonesty offence will affect you for the rest of your life, all future potential employers will be extremely wary of you.
You seem worried that you might be caught out - let that be a lesson for you, and in the future think more about what you put on your applications. Good luck!

There is no such thing as a FULL background check. Even if there were, there are BILLIONS of degrees between 'simple' and 'full'. How extensive a check the hotel does depends on the hotel in question.

Come on everyone, most places dont even check. For the lady that thinks that they should and she doesn't want criminals in her room, GET A LIFE! I work for a TOP hotel and have a back round. Would I go in and steal and do something to a guest? NOT a chance. Please change and grow. You think that Hotels are going to hire and pay people to do some of those very stupid jobs? HA HA HA

I would think every hotel is different - I work at one and I think they did a full background check. It's up to the discretion of the management I believe.

Hon, the hotel will do a comprehensive background check because of the type of establishment it is. Good luck. Why are you worried? Got something to hide?

Dont worry
I use to be a Hotel MGR
They usually call 1 or 2 former employers or references
but not much further than they
They are really too busy to care.

Depending on your job function, it might be none at all.
In the USA a lot of hotels and motels seem interested in hiring undocumented workers, especially like maid service.
