Both the RAM are 667 mHz. Does it make a difference if I use a PC-5300 instead of PC2-5300 as an upgrade to my laptop? I am using a HP dv6114tx which has 512mB PC2-5300 SODIMM 667 mHz RAM, and wish to upgrade to a 1gB making a total of 1.5gBs

PC-5300 would denote that it is DDR RAM, while PC2-5300 would denote DDR2 RAM. They are not at all compatible with each other. HOWEVER, there is no such thing as PC-5300 RAM, DDR never got that fast, so it was most likely just a mistype.

I am pretty sure that it doesn't have anything to do with being dual core. But I think if you put in a slower stick the other stick will be forced to run at the same speed as the slower one(this is the case with dual channel memory). But if you say they are both the same speed then i dont think there will be a problem. I think the only difference in the pc2 and pc ram types is the voltage use and I/O speeds and latency.... just buy the same one you will be better off.

pc2 -5300 is rated at 1.8V
pc5300 is rated at 2.5V

Never buy a different type than what your computer has for stock.
