Is it blood or what? Does it hurt?

The "bloody show" is when the mucus plug that is covering the cervix from the inside of the uterus, comes out. As you start to dilate, it slips through. It's a big, nasty blood clot, possibly accompanied by a small "period" amount of blood. Not everyone has a "bloody show". I never did.

You can use your plug and still have a couple weeks left of pregnancy, so don't panic and think you're going into labor unless your water breaks or you're having regular, strong contractions.

It's another term for your bloody mucus plug that will be lost sometime prior to delivery.

It won't hurt, however you should be aware that this could happen in a lot of different ways.

Some women lose their plug weeks before delivery, some lose it immediately at the beginning of labour, some don't lose it until labour is well established. A lot of women lose it when they are having an exammination by a doctor or a midwife late in their pregnancy or in early labour.

Did you take labour and birth classes at all? If not you might benefit from sitting down with your doctor and midwife and asking about what you can possibly expect from the birth experience and what to do if you think your are in labour.

My bloody show was just a thin stream of blood (bright red and not mucousy) in the toilet very early on the morning I went into labor. It was at that time that I realized I was having light, irregular contractions. My water broke at 3:00 pm that afternoon.

I've been told the mucous plug and the bloody show are NOT the same thing. After the mucous plug comes out, labor could be weeks away, but the real bloody show means labor is within hours.

They are probably talking about bloody show, another name for the mucus plug that blocks your cervix during pregnancy. It's just a bit of slime with a tinge of blood that falls out days or even weeks before the baby is born, and it's nothing to worry about. A lot of people don't even notice losing is and it disappears when they wipe in the bathroom.

some women get a "bloody show" when labor is beginning. It can be like period blood, or brownish. Every one and every baby is different. I had bright red blood with my first and nothing with my second. It doesn't usually hurt, but you could start to have contractions along with the bleeding. If and when that starts (the blood or contractions) you should go to the hospital to be checked especially as far along as you are.

It's called a "bloody show", its mucous-like with tinges of blood. It doesn't hurt at all. The day before I went into labor I got mine when I went to the bathroom.

"Show" is the term for losing your mucous plug. For your first baby especially, you may never see it and only lose the plug when you go into labour.

If you do suddenly discharge a painless blob of somewhat bloody mucous, that was it and you can expect labour to start generally withing 24 hours.
