until the baby is too long or wide for it and can not roll over comfortably.. most likely about 3-4 months depending on the baby's size.. definitely do not have the baby in the bassinet when he or she can sit up.. you don't want the risk of the baby pulling themselves up and falling out.

They are safe in a bassinet until they either begin to roll over or reach the weight limits set by that particular bassinet. If you have the money it may be worth you investing in a convertible crib. they are bigger, BUT last until the child leaves home if necessary except for replacing the mattresses. My sons-although we don't use it yet because we co-sleep-is a crib that turns into a toddler bed then into a full sized regular bed. If you decide to co-sleep once baby outgrows the bassinet, just do so safely. Take the same precautions in YOUR bed that you woudl for baby in his/her own bed. It CAN be done safely and is proving to have many benefits. **EDIT** Do you haev room for a pack and play? They can be bought with bassinet attachments that are not too uncomfortable and then you have the play pen you can use after as a bed if needed.

Until baby doesn't fit or can sit up, just like every one else has said. My little guy is 9 weeks old and he can reach the sides with his hands when laying in it. (It's an heirloom, wicker bassinet - could probably hold 50lbs without creaking but it's long and narrow). So in the next week or so it will be packed away and if he sleeps downstairs it will be in the playpen that is taking it's place.

Every baby is different and you will know when it is time to stop using it. Usually baby will let you know by not sleeping well in it, or you will see by looking that baby is too big. That or will just get sick of tripping over it and walking around it!

Usually about three months. There are weight limitations and recommendations on the literature that came with the bassinet.

It isn't safe to put a baby in a bassinet after they start to try to sit up. I know a lot of people who kept their babies in them until they could pull to standing. We had a co-sleeper that seemed like a good idea, but we never used it. It is so much easier (and cheaper) to have the baby sleep in bed with you. Their are lots of safe ways to co-sleep with your baby. Unless you are a really heavy sleeper or thrash around a lot, you can co-sleep safely. Where do you think babies slept for centuries before bassinets and cribs were invented?

My little girl stayed in a bassinet for about 6 weeks.I was afraid that if we waited too long it would be hard to transition her.

I waited until my son could roll over in it. He was small, so outgrowing it wasn't a problem. When he was able to roll, I felt that he should move into a crib because of the sides of my basinet. It was cloth with mesh panels. If he could roll over, I felt he could put his face onto the cloth part and not be able to breathe well enough.

Until it's too big. My daughter was through with the thing in about 4 months. My son is a lot more petite and was in there about 6 months.

Until it's mother picks it up. (Sorry, couldn't resist )lol

Actually until he or she out grows it. I think my son was maybe 3 or 4 months by the time I got a crib.
