I drove (by myself) from Phila, PA to San Francisco, CA.
It took about five days at 10 hours a day.
You should look into low cost hotels. I usually stayed at Econo Lodge each night. You should plan a hotel at every 600 miles. If there are two of you, go further.
Most hotels have internet, but do not count on internet if it is low cost.
If you travel during the winter, you may want to drive through the southern states (this is the way I went).

Nothing personal youngsters but mapquest doesn't know what they are talking about.
My personal best is NYC -SFO in 56 hours
I did it with a friend of mine and it was definetley chemically aided
Out in the real world high 70's* to high 80's are definetly do-able
As you get further west your average mph will increase and your average mpd will increase also
NYC -SFO in 3.5 days looks like this:
Day 1) NYC-Ottawa IL-850 miles -16 hours
Ottawa because it places you well west of Chicago traffic-wake up the next morning and haul ashes westward
Day 2) Ottawa -Cheyenne WY -900 miles -15 hours
Day 3) Cheyenne -Reno NV -950 miles
17hours ,Salt Lake City is in the middle of that leg and that can slow you down
Day .5 ) Reno -SFO 250 miles - a realistic 4- 5+ hours
The problem with doing really fast trips is that the law of diminishing returns will take effect . On that little 56 hour trip , I slept for 14 solid hours after I finished it and it took me another day or so before I felt right,
You also have to know that while tired drivers don't get the notoriety that the drunks do , they probably kill just as many people. If you nod off for 2.5 seconds at 80 mph , you just covered a football field . If there happens to be a semi in the middle of that field , your day is over - so be careful.

HI...Depending on where in California; however, I would say about 4 days if you drive major interstates/freeways and do about 9-12 hours a day of driving. Hope this helps! I did it and survived by driving no more than about 10 hours a day and didn't drive at night so I could get a good night's rest each night to be safe to drive during the day since I was by myself. Good luck!

ive done it in three and a half days, and thats only driving in the day time, 70-80 mph,(we had a radar detector) and we went from Long Island to Daton ohio, from daton to selena kansas, from there to green river utah, and from green river to los angeles, and we got there before the sun went down,, it was a hell of a trip, you can stretch it to five days but i dont think you can safely do it in less than three, unless you have many drivers to rotate and sleep, so you never stop, but we stopped in three places, besides gas and food
