I just quit using Chantix about 3 weeks ago after smoking off-and-on for about 15 years. I would quit smoking many times but found that when I got really stressed out about work or home I would reach for a cigg. It was a stress reliever thing.
Yeah, you know what it does to you and all that crap. But so does alcohol and a HUGE amount of people still have a drink or two, or more. We eat things with lots of fat in them and that's not good for us. We eat things with lots of sugar too! We drive too fast and that can kill us earlier too. Lots of things in life can kill you earlier and/or aren't good for you but we still do them for a myriad of reasons.......they satisfy so underlying urge within us, even if it is just a momentary urge.

I think it's because they are bored<----but once you do start, it soon becomes a habit, lighting a cigarette- moving it to the mouth or away), (or)get into smoking b/c of peer pressure(thought it was cool at the time- not taking it into account of how addictive it will become), or- they known people who smoked as young children and then get into it themselves as they get older-unless they haven't already started when young. But from experience i now know for a fact that it is addictive. It was really hard for me to quit but i had to cause i realized the long-term consequences if i didn't. ** these are just my opinions btw.

There is no one set answer to anyone's addiction to smoking. I quit a 43 year addiction and it would take a panel of experts to figure out why I did it that long. It is a complex addiction worse than some drug addictions.

Someone they looked up to smoked, so they tried it to look "cool" like them and they got addicted
I think I threw up after every cigaretted of my first pack, but I still was addicted - thankfully, I have been a nonsmoker for over 5 years now

Some people like doing things they know they shouldn't and by the time they realize they shouldn't have, it's too late.

Maybe to help relieve stress? Maybe it's just a bad habit?
I don't smoke and I think it's a dirty, disgusting habit.

They started thinking that it was 'cool' and just wanting to 'fit in', and then they were addicted and they couldn't stop if they wanted to.
