I just got the newt yesterday and last night he was in the tank. I'm pretty sure he can't have gotten out of the tank, so where is he?

Hiding maybe? Check under things that you have in the tank, he might be nervous and hiding. Maybe he burried himself. Maybe you should have a tight lid on it so he cannot get out!! We're not there so we can't tell you where his is, lol........but check those things and run your finger through the bottom to see if he comes out. If he got out, maybe you should name him Houdini. But I would definately seek him out wherever he is in the tank, just in case he DID escape, you can go looking for him. Remember, they are pretty sly, so keep a good eye out in the tank!

Good luck!!! ;o)

Firebelly newts are in straightforward terms semi-aquatic. they must have a land section besides as water. you ought to in all probability regulate or build a tank the place the newt could have a heated and filtered pool of water besides to a dry land section so as that it ought to leave the water sometimes even though it may be a great form of artwork. As for the compatibility of the betta and newt, it fairly is not unavoidably impossible to maintain them at the same time yet you would be wanting to maintain a watch on the newt via fact it ought to evaluate the betta a potential snack because it gets larger.

some things to check are:
.does your tank have a lid?
.is it a tight fitting lid? or are there even tiny gaps?
.the gravel in the bottom of the tank, is it loose? something your newt could be hiding in?

newts arent completely incapable of simply climbing up n crawling out of an open lidded tank...or even tiny gaps you may think are too small could easily be used for escape...
if you are sure the tank was secure, then he is possibly hiding in the substrate or what ever you have got in your tank...make sure that you keep the tank secure even if you cant see the newt...it could still be in there and you leaving it open would allow it to escape...just keep doing what you do to look after it, feeding etc...if it doesnt show up it may have died due to bad temperature or illness or anything...this is only if you have a secure tank...if you dont, it is possible it has escaped...he probably wouldnt have gone too far if hes gotten out...so search the room very carfully...he would probably be looking for fod n water so if he isnt in the room the tank is in, search bathrooms n kitchens...tell everyone else in the house to watch where they step...
good luck

I have had many situations like this.
check in any hiding places or plants in the tank to see if he/she is fighting. also check the roof of the top, sometimes they hide there. look ANYWHERE in the tank that they could be. If you still can't find them, cover and places/vents that he/she could fall into, and place food such as dried bloodworms around the place on tinfoil to see if he/she shows up.
also, there is the rare possibilty that the newt was eaten by other tank mates.

Check the filter, check under and behind all decorations, sift through the gravel, AND search the floor within about 5 feet of your tank. Newts can find the strangest ways to get out of their tanks or hide in them...

Soup Nazi was right!

These were mostly all good answers IMO, so I will not add any more other than Yahoo Answers maybe should simply remove the thumbs up and down feature so that the trolls will find somewhere else to go!
(these trolls have thumbed me too on answers I have backed up my answers with links with scientific research).

If he's not in the aquarium, crawl around on your hands an knees and look everywhere for him....under the furniture, in corners, ect...

I remember when I was 11yrs old we had one that kept getting out. He always seemed dead when we found him, but he always perked back up after we put him back in the aquarium. Sometimes it would take a few hours though...
And YES we had a cover on the aquarium.

Good luck, hope you find him quickly.

Added: Look farther than 'five feet' because they will crawl all the way to another room....

What you need to do is complete dissect your whole fish tank to find it. That happened to me when I had a firebelly salamander. It went up the tubing and got stuck and died. Stupid azz amphibians!

Could someone have taken him out of the tank. Are there children in the home? If he did manage to get out of the tank, he's probably crawled into some secluded spot. Check your air vents and behind furniture. And please watch where you walk, so you don't accidentally step on the poor creature. I hope you find him.
