Does it refer to chemical composition or is it an arbitrary letter-number combination? Or is it something else entirely? Thanks for any insight.

It's a military formulation and a lot number that was assigned to that particular type of substance - It was successful. They named the stuff, and now it's a household name.

you answered your own ? ...composition 4. it was just the fourth thing they tried, it was created in england. by the way, it will not mold very well like in the movies, but if you twist it it will soften up.
