Yes, how the backing is put on, can greatly affect whether the unit is square, or not.

As 'Dune' mentioned, you can measure from corner to diagonal corner (tape measure) to check for the unit being square (the measurement should be the same, if it is square.. if it is not the same, then it is off) A quick check is to stand back and look at the face of the unit... are all the doors and drawers off in the same direction? (i.e. -- are they all twisted out of square in the same direction?) If so.. then you can probably fix it easily, by taking the backer off, and resetting it. I'd check for this, before adjusting the door hinges.

Also check to make sure the unit is not sitting unevenly on the floor.... for example, something might be under the foot of one end, causing the unit to twist.

Lastly, check the hinge and drawers for adjustment.

Check the hinges on the doors, in most cases furniture door hinges have an adjustment in them, there is a small grub screw in the bracket on the gable (side) wher the door tongue slides into. You have to turn the grub screw slightly and it will adjust the door accordingly. By turning all screws one way or the other you will adjust the doors to fit properly. The draws, sometimes, on diy kits tend to be tight so just get some sunlight soap and rub on the runners, or other times you have to give them a hit tocheck they are fitted together. I hope this works for you. If it doesn't my age old advice is to sit down with a nice glass of wine and think about it, if it works still have the wine ...and gloat how good you did. Ciao 4 now. The back board , if put on the way they showw shouldn't make a difference.

Be for putting on the backboard, check that everything is square.
Measure carefully between corners diagonally and when the two measurements are the same attach the back board.
That was the way we assembled doors and bookshelves.
