so, why are they calling themselves as "THE" United states of america...

depsite having such a long name, and I dont even know the reason for that (maybe just copying the idea off the UK?), I dont understand why they should use 'the' in their country's name.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? the THE in the above title is a proper article of a proper noun. within nyc is the borough (boro) of THE BRONX. that, too, has a proper article as part of the name. all other four boros are not so designated. might also be reason as THE BRONX is the only boro named after a family (who used to own and live there). why, you ask? because it is and we can! also, it is considered proper english grammar form. we are also know as america and THE STATES. see, that pesky proper article comes into play, once more. son of a gun! just consider it proper english form. some proper nouns roll off the tongue with that THE stuck in the front! get it? got it? good!

At the time we were THE united states. There were no other independent countries in the New World, only European colonies.

Due to English grammar: THE is used to mean ALL the states in the union.

Flowers of America is generic; it could refer to any flowers in America.

THE flowers of America refers to ALL the flowers in America.

"The" is used as an emphasis. Calling it United States of America just doesn't sound right.
