buy a new wax ring for under the toilet. This happens a lot when tile is laid. It isn't a major issue. I have tile in both bathrooms, and the wax ring is cheap and easy to install.

If the tile was laid when the toilet was not in place, it's possible the flange is too low. The flange is the connection for the toilet to the drain. If the flange is not high enough, the wax ring which seals the connection, will not make a good seal. You can buy "extensions" that raise the height of the flange. If the tile was laid around the toilet while it was in place, then you may need to replace the wax ring that seals the connection between the toilet and the drain flange.
Good Luck.

This is not a "common problem" only a problem by people that don't know what they're doing and, novices.

What they may have done was not put in a extension for the toilet pipe, it's an extension that makes up for the rise in the ceramic floor now that you've moved it up about 1/2 inch with the mud. Then they probably put in the same wax ring, compounding the problem.

What they have to do is put in an extension to the toilet pipe and then a new wax ring or, your going to have nothing but, trouble after this.

common mistake when laying ceramic tile is the tile is higher than the flange and even if it is just a bit higher leaks can be a problem.......the flange has to be raised................
if every thing was done the way it was supposed to be try putting a double wax seal on and go from there..........

You may need to get a collar extension to bring the pipe up to the level the floor and a new wax seal. Some people just get two wax seals and stack them.
