Imo I kinda felt Stairway to Heaven to be quite a bore,

but here are some recommendations baised on some epic alternative/punk/ and progressive rock artists (most recommended are listed first)

21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson (Highly Recommended)

Paranoid Android - Radiohead (Classic song about annoying people at the local pub)

Land - Patti Smith (Insanity, fear, the words of a mad woman)

Knights of Cydona - Muse (Horses and Synthesizers, that is all)

The Dead Flag Blues - Godspeed You! Black Emperor (very minimal, but very haunting)

The King of Carrot Flowers pt 1 and 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel (The whole album is just one big love song to Ann Frank, but it is a very beautiful intro)

Then of course you must listen to 2112 by Rush atlest once in your life (WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL!)

"Epic" by Faith No More is epic.

Anyway, are you talking about long songs?

Some good ones have been named, and there still are some good ones, but I'll save myself time and say:

Most of the stuff from Dream Theater. They're a progressive metal band.
