Most probably not, could the company be downsizing? 23 yr is a lot of time. Some company's downsizing usually keep low payed workers, and lay off or offer early retirement to others. This is part of restructuring the company. Layoffs are a good way to be let go and still be able to collect unemployment. Will she be called back soon? Does she have a 401? Maybe this is the time to restructure her career. First by applying for unemployment, and second looking for a new job, and third, rolling over her 401 into an IRA. or ?

Does she work for a large corporation? Is she a minority? Is the current manager a minority? Is the current manager a woman? Does your wife have issues with authority figures?
If you answered yes to four out of five, then the answer you seek is yes.
If you answered yes to all five questions, then the answer you seek is no.

Post this in legal and law... They will have better answers for you I think.
I'm not sure, what where their reasons? I don't think it's discrimination, has she been wrote up? Have disciplinary actions been taken against her? Also, if they eliminated her position then no but they can't fill it for 12 months and if they do they have to offer it to her first.

Not enough info. Probably not, unless she was fired because she is a woman, black, old, etc. Most employment is 'at will' meaning that you can quit any time, and they can fire you at any time, for any or no reason (except the above reasons).
