I read somewhere that at one time Burger Chef was 2nd only to McDonald's in number of stores in America!! What I loved about them the most was that fabulous "works" bar where you could load up your burger with anything you wanted!! I also remember one time they had a special deal where you could get a plain burger for 10 cents!! That's right... 10 for a buck!! And then you would just go and put whatever toppings you wanted on them... WHAT A DEAL!!! It's a shame this chain didn't make it...

Yes, from what I've read... Burger Chef's pretty much turned into "Hardee's"!!! Go check out YouTube for some great old "Burger Chef" commercials!! They even have the Star Wars Burger Chef commercial!!

I'd forgotten all about this chain until you mentioned it. My hometown had one and it was constantly packed with people. Everything there was clean, fresh not to mention good.
Those were the days.

We had them here where I live when I was very very young but I don't remember them very well. My parents used to go there all the time when they were dating. Other than A & W it was the only fast food resturant in the entire county when they were dating. They loved telling stories about that. I'm 23 years old and I live in a rural area a few hours drive out of St Louis.
I remember when Hardees used to have works bars like that where you could put whatever you wanted on your burger too but they don't do that anymore.

Most Burger Chefs were bought out by Hardees back in the late '80s. I remember the place well. I lived in Detroit, there was one on the corner of Grand River and 8 Mile Rd. I remember that their burgers came in sandwich bags.
Great place. I also miss Hardees roast beef sandwiches.
I think they dropped them from their menu.

Oh my gosh! I totally remember Burger chef!
My grandma lived in Brighton, Michigan, right there on Grand River Road, and she would take me there every weekend! (I was a chubby kid!)
I am 39 now, so that must have been over 30 years ago.. I can't quite remember the works bar.. I remember just getting a plain hamburger.. i hated toppings until I was a pre-teen...
Whatever happened to them?
i guess it is better.. at least I thinned out!

I lived in WV and we had Burger Chef there. It was nice to put just the amount of something you want on your burger. I loved the dill pickle slices. I think there's a used car lot where it used to be, what a shame.

I miss it as well, but Roy Rogers is probably the surviving chain that is most similar to burger chef. Check their website to see if they have any in your area.
